Accommodation
In Riga you have enough choice in accommodation. There are cute hostels for a low budget, affordable hotels, nice apartments and of course pure luxury. We found location the most important thing. A must if you visit Riga is a stay in the middle of the old center. Accommodation and food and drink are very affordable, so you can opt for comfort even with a smaller budget. The Old City Boutique Hotel is highly recommended. Comfort, luxury, beautiful view and the perfect location! View the hotel here.

Via ryanair you have various offers to fly to Riga cheaply. We ended up paying only 50 euros for a return trip and flying from Wezen.

Friday
We arrived in the city at the end of the afternoon. After discarding our stuff we decided to visit the Rozengrals restaurant on the recommendation of Soetkees . What an experience. You go down an old spiral staircase completely surrounded by candles where you are surprised by live folklore music and candlelight. No windows or lighting in this restaurant. No, here you go back in time. And the food; delicious! Are you a fishing enthusiast then this is the place for you.

After a delicious meal and some glasses (maybe bottles) of wine, we decided to discover the nightlife. You have nice cozy bars here, but also great clubs. Cocktails are very cheap so good for your wallet but less good for the day after. It was a late and pleasant evening with a busy schedule ahead of us.

Saturday

The next day, after some paracetamoles, we decided to go into town. The architecture of the buildings is beautiful. In the city gray Soviet buildings are interspersed with beautiful medieval buildings. The contrasts are very large and that makes it so beautiful. The old city center is enchanting. We walked wonderfully and were not bored at all. What a beautiful city.

After wandering around for a few hours, we decided on one of the many hip coffee shops . You can eat and drink here for little. We decided to stock up on some groceries and accidentally come across a sushi restaurant. Our next stop. We enjoyed delicious sushi for a couple of hours here. with a nice can of tea. Of course there was a big step back, but this time with slightly fewer cocktails.

Sunday

After another successful evening, fresh into the city. After a good breakfast we decided to take a walk to the well-known market halls from Riga. The complex consists of five large halls, four of which are connected to each other and connected by a central aisle. The five pavilions each have a specialization: for fish, vegetables, bread products and meat. Around the market halls there is also an open-air market where fruit, vegetables, clothing and curios are sold. This is really recommended. A true experience for all your senses!

A half-hour walk from the market halls would be a flea market. We, as mess lovers, decided to visit this market. During our walk the beautiful old buildings disappeared and we felt ourselves more and more in Russia. At a rusty entrance we finally find the flea market. There was no tourist in sight, only a heaven of things with a rich history. The positions so close to each other that you can hardly walk and the stuff piled so far that you can not even see the sellers.

Some people would scream crazy here, but for us this was a small paradise. Unfortunately we had to leave everything, but oh how I would like to go back with a van.

On the way back to the old city, we quickly visited an Orthodox church. Very different from the old churches in the old center. The building is huge, gold and very kitsch. Coincidentally there was just a wedding and we were allowed to take a look. A very nice experience. In the city we ran into the Black Magic bar , where we enjoyed delicious chocolate.

After quite a few kilometers and an impressive day, we decided to eat a typical Latvian meal. However, we have decided that this is not our kitchen 🙂

Monday
We wake up early, because we fly back in the morning. A hearty breakfast and there we went again. What a wonderful weekend and also very affordable. Really recommended! Something for everyone.
